Laser Light Therapy

Laser Light Therapy

Laser therapy uses light to penetrate through the skin into tissues. It has been used by physiotherapists since the ‘80s for a wide range of conditions. Although it only penetrates a few millimetres, it can have a profound effect on tissue healing. It has been shown to aid in pain relief, reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, stimulate wound healing, stimulate tissue regeneration, and reduce scarring. Research has shown that laser therapy can be a powerful anti-inflammatory that is equally effective to anti-inflammatory medications. Physiotherapists effectively use laser therapy for the treatment of a multitude of acute and chronic soft tissue injuries. These include but are not limited to tendinopathy (eg. tennis elbow and achilles tendonitis), rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, trigger points, thoracic pain, neck pain, jaw soreness, and wound healing. Cleared by the FDA in 2003, Class IV LASER therapy has become standard of care for many musculoskeletal injuries. Class IV LASERs can penetrate over 4 inches into the deep musculoskeletal tissue. The number of treatments required depends on the nature of the problem and the length of time the patient has been affected by it. Some conditions may be resolved with as few as one treatment. However, chronic and/or deep-seated conditions may take as many as 10 treatments. LASER therapy technology has been recently endorsed by professional organizations such as the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), World Health Organization (WHO) and International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). There are no known side effects from LASER therapy and the results are long lasting.

Pre and Post Surgical Program

Surgeons routinely refer post-surgical patients to our physical therapists to help them recover strength, function and mobility. Our therapists provide one-on-one, evidence-based physical therapy treatment sessions to help facilitate your recovery and return to activities of daily living (ADLs), work, recreational activities and even competitive sports. Whether you just had surgery, are wondering if you may need it, or are trying to avoid it altogether, physical therapy can help. Physical therapy is a conservative (non-invasive) treatment method that can prevent or delay surgery. Pre-surgical treatment, also known as prehabilitation, focuses on maximizing your full potential before surgery so that the rehabilitation after surgery is faster and has better outcomes. Muscle begin to lose mass after only a few days of disuse. Gaining the most strength and range of motion possible before surgery will help to ameliorate the muscle mass lost while you are recovering from your surgery. Post-surgical treatment requires medical specialists who are trained in rehabilitation protocols. Depending on your surgery, there will be structures that should not be stretched or strengthened for a certain period of time. Our physical therapists are up-to-date with post-surgical protocols to make sure you are rehabbing quickly, but also safely. Whether you are about to have surgery or have had it already, we can help decrease pain and restore function with treatments designed to help you reach your goals.

Injured workers who benefit most from these programs are usually at least 30 days out from their injury and have a medium or higher physical demand category job to return to. These are full body intensive conditioning programs that focus on work simulation activities to get injured workers back to work. Work Conditioning An intensive, goal-oriented conditioning program designed to restore neuromuscular and musculoskeletal function including strength, power, endurance, joint mobility, ROM, motor control, cardiovascular endurance and functional abilities.
